10 - The Scientific Method Made Easy

Back

The 'Made Easy' series explains the evidence of our origins, from the Big Bang to the human migration out of Africa. This video explains how we acquire this knowledge, and how ideas go from a hunch in a laboratory to accepted theories taught in school. The video cuts at the end, and the final sentence should read: "In the next video, I'll look at whether belief can be regarded as science." (Music: "The Harry Lyme Theme" written and performed by Anton Karas.)

Excellent video but: 1. Fact is not theory. Facts are perceivable sense datum while theories are mental constructs used to explain these facts. 2. It is not true that science begins with no assumptions. Science assumes the world is an ordered whole (a cosmos) and that natural phenomemon can be explained by natural causes.

"1. Fact is not theory." Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the video did I say otherwise? I think (without watching it again) what I said was that a theory is just about the highest form of proof you can get in science, and that people who don't understand the word 'theory' in the scientific sense, they can use the word 'fact'. Most people think that the Earth going round the sun is a fact, but it's a theory.

"Science assumes the world is an ordered whole" No. One interesting idea based on quantum physics is that we are one of an infinite number of universes.

"...and that natural phenomemon can be explained by natural causes." I think you mean can 'only' be explained by natural causes. But then, what do you mean by 'natural' causes?

Indeed sir, 'proof' is for mathematics. Science relies on supporting evidence, for which there is volumes in support of evolution!

It means it can be proven incorrect.
watchman241 (Saturday 30th of August 2008 03:05:35 PM)
no it doesnt, it means that if it is false then this can be determined. What you have said means that it is incorrect and can be proven so.
watchman241 (Wednesday 27th of August 2008 03:04:33 PM)
well, if you can experimentally test a theory that means that its falsifable. This doesnt mean it is false, just that if it is it can be found out to be. If you cant even test a theory its not falsifiable and this is even worse since you could say its not even wrong.
eduzitcho (Wednesday 27th of August 2008 02:15:26 PM)
what are you suggesting? that we all should stop researching and start reading the bible?
watchman241 (Wednesday 27th of August 2008 03:08:17 PM)
Hardly, what I am suggesting is that just because we have expertise in acquiring knowledge through the scientific method doesnt mean that we can deduce that questions we havent even consider as wrong or impossible. We also do not look at the weaknesses of theories that we do have because they seem to work or people we consider great genius' have created them.
