http://www.ted.com J.J. Abrams traces his love of the unseen mystery -- the heart of Alias, Lost, and the upcoming Cloverfield -- back to its own magical beginnings, which may or may not include an early obsession with magic, the love of a supportive grandfather, or his own unopened Mystery Box.

He says a lot of things that rub me the wrong way, like that mystery is better than knowledge. Maybe in drama, but not in reality. And not putting gun up Tom Cruise's nose is the last nail on the coffin; if you can't act with discomfort, you can't act. I'm not going to go see Abrams' Star Trek XI. He may have his ideas of the characters, but I don't like his blatant dislike of science.
what are you talking about? none of this says anything about his feelings towards science and what does tom cruise's ability to act have to do with his ability to direct? if anything this whole idea of mystery, to me, is exactly what science is about. what we already know is nowhere near as exciting as what we have yet to discover. the mystery is the appeal and the driving force, absolutely. its like ur trying as hard as u can to be offended.

...id like to evolve that idea.
any suggestions?
whats more important than knowledge? that could get u further? lets say, in making movies. what could be better than having technical knowledge [that just makes awesome special effects?]. what would make your film kick ass even without that knowledge?

Very insightful and inspiring, especially because I happen to be going to the same college he went to to study the same thing! And now I'll remember not to hurt Tom's nose.
