The same thing must have been repeated a 1000 times in this thread. So once again, NO Nynorsk is NOT at all like Danish. It is also very different from the language presently spoken in Norway, called Riksmål or Bokmål. To put it simply: Written Dansk=Written Bokmål. Written Nynorsk Diff. Than Written Dansk & Written Bokmål. That's b/c Nynorsk is an artificial language made based on the dialects spoken in W Norway and on Old Norse. Nynorsk is however, a lot closer to Icelandic.

Danish and Norwegian Bokmål in their written forms are very close to being identical. The pronounciation is very different however, and I understand that Norwegians find our way peculiar :-) Personally, I never use English to communicate with fellow Scandinavians. Normally that works well, but especially with Swedes from Stockholm it can be problematic. If we speak slowly and slang-free anyone should understand each other.

I thought Danish and nynorsk were quite closed languages, weren't they? Do you usually use English to get understood up there in Scandinavia?
