Root Servers don't store actual data such as webpage/databases. If one went down, I imagine the net would slow/stop until they replace it - no actual data would be lost, people would just be unable to access it. They probably have backup servers anyhow.

Technically thats not true, you need to google for google, then copy and paste the url, into another google search. This creates an infinite loop which slowly expands until all available bandwidth is consumed everywhere.
