Regarding 'chops' - MF was pretty good in his earlier years, but as he got older his tone quality and control deteriorated significantly.
His bands too started to deteriorate in quality after the early seventies - much less disciplined and trained than the earlier bands. Going to a MF show from the mid-seventies on became a real 'roll of the dice' - somtimes you got a tight, great show, but often you got a sloppy, poorly executed performance.

To Waltandrus-You are correct. Bill manufactured the "Doc Severinsen" mouthpiece which all the muscicans used including Maynard
Ferguson. I worked for Bill and Mille Ratzenberger for 13 years at the Continental and heard the world's greatest musicians. Bill knew Maynard from Jim and Andy's Club in NYC where any musician who was anybody hung out including Judy Holiday. Bill's mouthpiece was called the "Jet-Tone Musical Mouthpiece" which Doc indorsed in the 60s. HIs factory was in Farifield.

He must be. To say Maynard had no chops could get you in trouble with God...if you're serious.
