Me and two dudes dropped acid to this album once a month for three years. Wish I had one more hit.

Not sure why you got thumbed down dude but I thumbed you up again. This is one of the albums that defined my teenage years. We would play it every weekend in an attic while getting high along with a variety of other old punk and grunge music. I wouldn't be the same person I am now if it didn't happen.

...But once I had mined the shoegaze vaults, and found that sound I had been imagining, and came once again back to Sonic Youth, I came to appreciate them for what they are, one part ethereal guitar rock band, three parts distorted and jagged punk rock. It's meant to be almost haunting. It can provide for some deep experiences, if you arent listening for a smooth and pretty guitar-pop sound.
Let me now implant a recommendation into your minds.
Check out My Dad Is Dead. Amazing guitar band.

Your two comments sum up my feelings towards SY and shoegaze completely.

It took me a long, long time to get into Sonic Youth completely. I always liked them a little bit, but before hearing them, I heard them described as being a big ethereal wall of sound guitar band. What I imagined, reading that, was what I discovered later in bands like My Bloody Valentine and Ride. I didn't know about shoegaze yet at the time, so I considered Sonic Youth to be a letdown, because I had the shoegaze sound in my head, and wanted to find a band that sounded that way (cont..)
