PF Sloan Sailover

Back

So who IS PF Sloan? If you didn't make the connection between this mysterious behind-the-scenes music man and his many chart hits in the 60's, now's your chance to connect the dots. On August 22nd, HighTone Records will release 'Sailover', the folk rocker and street poet's first U.S. release since he famously walked away from the music business 30 years ago. It features several new Sloan compositions as well as new recordings of some of his most treasured songs, made famous by both himself and other artists (including the hit "Eve of Destruction"). The result is a true to form Sloan album, encapsulating the fullness of his talent while simultaneously giving listeners a look back and forward into his musical history. PF Sloan will tour extensively in support of 'Sailover', including an album release show 8/24 in NYC at Joe's Pub. Album guests include Sloan fans Lucinda Williams, Frank Black, Felix Cavaliere and Buddy Miller. 'Sailover', recorded in Nashville with producer Jon Tiven (Frank Black, Wilson Pickett, B.B. King), includes 14 tracks and finds Sloan rejuvenated with confidence anew. The whole feel of the album is one of freedom and reclamation. The dusty, whiskey-soaked opener "Sins of a Family" features duet vocals by Lucinda Williams, and leads you into a compelling, melancholy tale of real-life woes and struggles, portraying moments of bittersweet intimacy and broken youth. "Eve of Destruction" is Sloan's epic anti-war anthem, a major hit in the 60's as recorded by Barry McGuire and redone here with additional vocals by Frank Black and Buddy Miller. The sense of urgency and passion brings the song full circle, and makes it more relevant than ever. Jam-packed full of talented guests, the album oozes with a tangible sense of camaraderie and energy. You can hear everyone fully into the moment, fully into being part of Sloan's reclamation of his place in musical history. PF Sloan started his adventure into the music biz at age 13, making a single for LA R&B label Aladdin Records. In the early 60's, his group the Fantastic Baggys issued the album 'Tell 'Em I'm Surfin',' which contained the hit title track and the classic surf music song, "Summer Means Fun." By the mid-60's he had become a lynchpin of the storied LA folk rock scene. His hit songs, as sung by others, leapt up the charts. To name a few - The Turtles ("You Baby"), The Searchers ("Take Me For What I'm Worth"), Johnny Rivers ("Secret Agent Man") and Jan & Dean ("From All Over The World"). PF had a musical Midas touch, co-producing the first Barry McGuire and Mamas & Papas recordings on Dunhill, as well as playing the famous lead guitar parts on their hit songs "California Dreamin" and "Monday, Monday", singing the falsetto parts on most of Jan & Dean's records, and serving as the in-house A&R man/producer for Dunhill. With 'Sailover', PF Sloan reminds us of his towering contributions to contemporary popular music.

I have been an avid P.F. Sloan fan since I first noticed him in the mid-sixties, and I knew all that other stuff, but I had no idea he actually sang those falsettos on Jan & Dean tracks. Gosh, I love the Internet!
