although this opening is truly astounding, i dont like the way the rest of the piece, which is equally as good, is hardly ever heard.
i also dislike the fact that, in general, people only really know Strauss for these few minutes of music.
He wrote many pieces that, in my view are superior to 'also sprach'...Alpine Symphony for instance

Not exactly. It was devoted to a concluding line of a section in Friedrich Nietzsche's Twilight of the Idols: How to Philosophize with a Hammer. Nietzsche used the character for his own illustrative purposes there and in the book Thus Spake Zarathustra.
