Athens (Αθήνα) 2004 CC - The Beijing (北京) 2008 Presentation

Back

This clip highlights one of the main highlights of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games closing ceremony: the Beijing (北京) presentation for the world to come for the 2008 Olympic Games (TC: 2008年北京夏季奧運會; SC: 2008年夏季奥林匹克运动会). First, a montage of Chinese people in various settings, from traditional locales to the bustling modern cities on the Jumbotron screen. Second, all those ladies sing a remix of the Chinese folk song called "Jasmine Flowers", "Jasmine" or "Mo Li Hua" (茉莉花). Also, they are holding and playing various unique Chinese instruments, from the Erhu (二胡) to the Pipa (琵琶). To round out this part, a dancer with two long red ribbons does her dance with them. Do not forget the people holding Chinese lanterns (TC: 燈; SC: 灯) in the background. Next, a demonstration of Chinese martial arts (武功) by a central character in white with eight (8) red "body guards." They show one of many routines in the martial art called Tai Chi Chuan (TC: 太極拳; SC: 太极拳). There are five (5) main styles of it. Also, some modern dance moves are mixed with other forms of Wushu (TC: 武術; SC: 武术) routines. Also, eight (8) more young people are dressed in elaborate costumes to perform a Chinese fine art called Beijing Opera (TC: 京劇; SC: 京剧). Before it could be called Peking Opera, but now Beijing Opera is accepted as the proper way of describing it, just like the city's name itself. By the way, here the commentary about the Chinese goals for the 2008 Olympic Games. Did it come true in the end? Finally, a very young girl was seen here standing on a giant Chinese lantern singing the "Jasmine" song, like all those ladies before her. At the end, all the performers came out to wave to the crowd and unfurl a banner "Welcome to Beijing" (TC: 北京歡迎光臨; SC: 北京欢迎光临). Note: TC stands for TRADITIONAL Chinese writing; SC stands for SIMPLIFIED Chinese writing. This clip would lead to the lowering of the Olympic Flag to be led out from the Olympic Stadium.

It's funny that all the Chinese I've talked to said the London presentation was the best part of that closing ceremony and they were disgusted by the lack of quality in the other parts. The British seem to think the other way: many of them hated the London segment but praised the other parts.

i guess its a clash of cultures, the chinese are probably used to seeing the stuff about beijing in the closing ceremony while the 2012segment was something new to them and i guess they are not used to seeing stuff like that so they like it while britain seems to hate it because we see it all the time like on T.V but the things at the closing ceremony about beijing you will never find in britain and we like it because its different so yeah its vice versa its a culture clash i think as i call it

I believe that London can pull of the 2012 Olympics and the 30th Olympiad! London has something planned big especially with the estimated costs of the Olympics. I am not saying that the past Olympics were horrible, in fact, they were great and I am also sure that London will do great! Don't comment anything negative for the London Olympics yet since the Olympics are another 4 years away! They have lots of time to prepare! 'Thank You London! Thank You UK!'

London's culture is pop, rock, Beckham and double decker bus? That's purely sad. Greece and China have so much to offer, so old in history. England should employ its history such as the industrial revolution, Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth etc. England is the grandmother of all England, where did that go? Hence, the eight minutes is wasteful and shallow! Hopefully, in the opening ceremony they would do something interesting and not a whole bunch of pop stars, it shows how boring your country is!

I'm hoping they contribute a significant portion to Shakespearean literature, since it's become such an important part of the world.
