I agree people were not as informed of things minute by minute as we are now. What they heard on the radio they believed as truth, they had no other reference.

lol i bought the entire radio adaptation, not realizing it was on youtube... but it was worth it.
most people think "it's that Tom Cruise movie..."
at least most people I've met think so

i fail to understand how anyone would have take this show literally if they heard it right from the start....i mean they introduce the damn PLAY in the beginning and mention the Mercury Theater by H.G Welles...doesnt the word BY imply it was written BY someone, doesnt theater mean FICTION??...i mean if u didnt hear the play right from the beginning then i can totally understand ppl gettin a bit freaked out~

Well, you see, the particular radio station the War of the Worlds was playing on was not popular at the time. There was another station that was really popular that everybody was listening to. But the popular station then started playing some song that was not so popular and then everybody started channel-surfing.

And so many people came to the station that War of the Worlds was on and it sounded like a news broadcast to them, so many began to panic. Not everyone, obviously, for the station did not play everywhere and some people heard the beginning, and many just didn't believe it. Not only did it sound like a news broadcast (with important scientists and such in the play; but they were really actors) but there were no commercials, only helping the fact that it might be really serious.
Some People Actully Committed Suicide Because they started to listen half way through and they didnt know it was a show type thing so they thought it was real
