Classic Game Room HD reviews the cartridge design and packaging for Sega Genesis video games! The Genesis is known as the Mega Drive (or MEGADRIVE) outside of the United States, and these games from the 16 bit era are hard to forget. Sega always made their products solid and build them to last. Genesis games are numerous, plentiful and easy to collect. They come in a hard plastic shell which easily fits into the slot on top of the MD and play when you turn the power on. In this review we look at the styling of a few of CGRHD's collected games like Mega Turrican, MUSHA, Herzog Zwei, Strider, Revenge of Shinobi, Cyborg Justice, Thunder Force II and Fire Shark. This particular Sega Genesis is a modded Genesis with s-video output and you can watch another video all about that one (search for it under s-video modified sega genesis). The Genesis cartridges are compared in size, scope and functionality to classic arcade style retro video game carts from the Nintendo Entertainment System NES and the Atari 2600.

The Strider art-work also has Warhammer 40,000 Space Marines in the background, literally identical to some the models they used to have in the early 90's. I only noticed that a few weeks ago; the artist involved must have been pretty lazy - I bet he never thought he'd get found out!
Damn, how did I miss out on 16 bit walk?! I knew something felt off when I was playing my Sega Genesis the other day, but I just kinda brushed it off. Now I know why I felt so strange, cuz I don't own 16 bit walk!
Anyhow Fantastic Dizzy had a unique cartridge shape as well. It was more rounded than your standard Genesis cart and was a little smaller too.

Yea. But all megadrive games made by Codemasters looked like that. I've only seen Codemasters and EA with weird designs, none else.
Yeah that was the only one I had, actually and it wasn't mentioned in the review (Codemasters games).
I thought of another one that could be considered. It was called Mike Dikta's Power Football by Accolade. I can't post a link to the cartridge here, but it looks like a slightly larger EA cart and it had some ridges at the top.
That game came out in 1991 I think.

Damn yes i forgot about that, i got Pele by Accolade but i forgot about its weird cart design. Exactly how you describe it :P. The Accolade ones look like the Codemasters design except kinda ridged. I'm gonna record these designs
I saw a game at my local hobby shop that reminded me of another oddly shaped game. Virtua Racing! The cartridge is freaking huge!!! Such a big cart for such a bad game though. I haven't played it since it came out but I thought it was just horrible then.

Oh i have that one :P, but the size was to fit the virtua processor thing in, i think, not another company's crazy cartridge design. Game sucks like you said, but nice music :P
