I have to agree with you. Naive and unrealistic are good ways to describe him. Any competent outdoorsman could see the trouble he was bound to find. He drank kerosene and pissed on a brush fire. And I often wonder, what did he think he was protecting them from?

steve irwin yes he knew Treadwell did know but did not use his own advise he should never have taken a lady their in the first place because of that one action she is dead to

He did not underestimate them. He knew everything they were capable of doing to him. One encounter he had he says the bear SHOULD have eaten him, it was hungry, it was in the position to do so, and it surprised Treadwell that the bear did not try.
tim did protect the bears to some extent, for instance poaching was never a real problem like it was elsewhere, but there still was some usually 3-4 accounts per year. in treadwells 13 summers not 1 single bear was poached.
That being said he did many things wrong, such as the draught year when he made a stream for the salmon to flow through. your right though, you really have to see more than grizzly man (although it truly is a wonderful documentary).
