The Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm is an advanced polymer pistol design that competes well with proven reliable designs like Glock and Sig. Upsides include a very low bore axis, Novak low profile sights, impressive magazine capacity (17 rds in 9mm!), excellent durability, simple takedown, threaded barrel options (like this Spec-Ops model), reinforced polymer frame, outstanding ergos (with interchangeable backstraps), black Melonite-finished SS slide and a quality build throughout. Smith and Wesson flat out knows how to make guns and the MP9 is no exception. The M&P pistol is offered in a variety of frame sizes, slide lengths, finishes, and calibers. It has just a few downsides and they are minor: 3 ounces heavier than the Glock 17 standard (28.2 vs 25.2 oz) and no checkering on the front trigger guard. It still is amassing its own track record and time will be the best judge as whether the SW MP9 will rise to the level of durability that the Glock design has established but all indications are positive.
